Hopkins Royal Cup

October 17^th & 18^th, 2008 

Lincoln-Douglas:
We will be offering Varsity, Junior Varsity and Novice competition in Lincoln-Douglas debate on both Friday and Saturday. Speaker awards will also be presented. We will be using the September/October resolution: 

Resolved: It it morally permissible to kill one innocent person to save the lives of more innocent people.

Policy Debate:
We will be offering Varsity, Junior Varsity and Novice competition on both Friday and Saturday. Speaker awards will also be presented. We will be using the NFL resolution that states:

Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase alternative energy incentives in the United States.

Judges (All Events):
Please cover your judging responsibilities. It is difficult to make up for a lack of judges on tournament days. In LD, please provide one judge for every 1-3 debaters. In Policy, please provide 1 judge for every 1-2 teams. An extremely limited number of tournament hired judges are available for $130.00 per judge. Teams that arrive without their full complement of judges may be subject to additional fees of $160 per missing judge. We will try to be as accommodating as possible, but try to bring your judges. 

Registration:
We will accept registrations through Wednesday, October 15th, 2008. Entries need to include the complete and accurate spellings of students participating and judges, as well as a coach’s contact information. Please e-mail all entry information to adam.torson@gmail.com. In Lincoln-Douglas the entry fee will be $30.00 per varsity debater and $25.00 per novice or JV debater. In Policy the entry fee will be $30.00 per team.

Hotels & Lodging:
We do not have a specific tournament hotel. We would recommend the following hotels, but many hotels in the MN/St. Paul area are within a few minutes drive of Hopkins High School .

If interested in “home stays” with other debate families in the area, please fill out the housing request form and submit with your registration materials. We will try to accommodate as many requests as possible.

Concessions:
We will have concessions available throughout the tournament provided by local restaurants and families. Since we need to keep the tournament moving along, please do not leave the Hopkins High School facility. The coaches/judges lounge will feature “royal” food provided by our debate families and boosters – free to all coaches and their judges. 

Tournament Site:
We hope to hold all events in Hopkins High School, located at 2400 Lindbergh Drive Minnetonka , MN 55305 . If tournament size requires more space, we may utilize a middle school just across the parking lot from HHS which is an easy walk from the High School. Should this be required an announcement will be posted at the tournament website and an e-mail notification sent out to all registered teams.
